Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct tyre pressure for my tyres?
Although the car manufacturers will put a sticker inside the door jamb or in the manual for their recommended tyre pressure - we suggest you drop in to a Mullins Tyre store where we will check and adjust your pressures while you wait - and we can put a sticker on your windscreen for future reference.
But I thought it was recommended that tyre pressures be checked when the tyres are cold ?
Yes it is recommended so do not travel too far before having us check your tyre pressures.
How do I determine the tyre size on my car?
Every tyre has it's size printed on both sidewalls - eg. 205/70R15 = tyre is 205mm wide - the sidewall height is 70% of 205mm and the tyre fits on a 15 " rim.
What significance are the other words and numbers on the side wall of my tyres?
Bridgestone Potenza 96W RE050A RFT = a Bridgestone tyre from the Potenza family - has a Load Index (96 ) of 710kg - and a Speed Rating (W) of 270km/h - the tread pattern ( ie. grooves in the tyre) are a RE050A pattern - and the tyre is a Run Flat Tyre - RFT
When do I need to replace my tyres so they are still safe?
There are wear bars moulded into the tread across the tyre - as the tyre wears the wear bars gradually become exposed and obvious to the eye - when they are level with the tread they are indicating remaining tread of 2mm - the law requires a minimum of 1.5mm - it's time to change your tyres.
Why are car tyres offered in sometimes three variations of price ranges when I enquire about new tyres for my car?
Tyres are produced by mixing compounds with the rubber - due to some of the compounds used in tyres they will cost more and will have a much longer life span ie. more mileage -therefore cheap tyres can mean you will be changing them more often. Japan has always been known as a country that has produced good quality tyres for years.
My vehicle has SNOW tyres fitted when I bought it - should I wear them out before replacing them ?
Snow tyres are designed for snow driving - they are not designed to travel at the speeds we would normally travel at on dry road - and if mixed with ordinary tyres on your car have the chance of creating a dangerously handling vehicle - the characteristics of road and snow tyres are different. We advise to remove them and set you vehicle up with a safe set of road tyres.
How often should I have my wheel alignment checked on my car - I travel 25,000 kms a year.
As steering and suspension components wear adjustments are necessary to the wheel alignment. We suggest a yearly check - and if the car wanders or pulls on the road and shows tyre wear then have the alignment checked.
